From the very beginning of our trip we were really looking forward to visit a ghost town. We sadly visited just one but at least we went to the most famous of the wild west: Bodie.
Bodie is located in the Bodie Hills east of the Sierra Nevada mountain range in California at an elevation of 8379 feet (2554 m). It is an original mining town from the late 1800’s. The first sign of the town’s decline occurred in 1912 and the last inhabitants left Bodie in the 40’s. What’s left today stands in a state of “arrested decay” and is maintained by the California State Parks System, who took over the town in 1962.
It is such a strange feeling to walk down the town because you know that you are not looking at decors but authentic houses, church, school etc… It is very moving and kind of creepy at the same time to look at all this life left behind. An amazing experience to have at least once in your life!
